RESUME TIPS
General Guidelines:
Your résumé is often your first impression with a potential employer. It should be easy to read, concise, easy to scan or fax, and clearly state your experience and skills. Name your file so that it is easily identified - use your first and last name and the position you're applying for. For example: JasonSmith_ResearchEngineer.doc.
Edit, edit, and edit again. Have someone else read it and look for spelling errors.
Formatting Guidelines:
Use a plain and easily readable font like Arial or Times New Roman.
Use a font size large enough for readability: 10-12pt works best. Don't try and squeeze more information on by making everything 7pt font!
Try not to use underline and italics.
Avoid tables, graphics and text boxes since these can make uploading documents difficult. Cut-and-paste features tend to reformat these elements and your résumé won't look correct.
Do keep at least ½" margins.
Résumé Organization
A common format that clearly organizes the information is suggested.
An example:
Name and Contact Information
- Make sure to include your email address and phone number where you can be reached
- Make sure your email address is professional
Career Objective
- This is an explanation of the type of position you are pursuing
- While some people believe this isn't necessary, it demonstrates a tailored résumé
Skills
- List skills and applications specific to the position to which you are applying.
- By separating these out, hiring managers are able to easily locate the information
Education
- College/University name, city, state and country
- Degree, Diploma, or Certification earned
- Graduation (or expected graduation) date, month and year
- Minor area of study, if applicable
Experience
- Use action words such as led, directed, created, managed and implemented
- Call out achievements that closely fit the needs of the position you are applying to
- Use specific and measurable facts and information
- Include activities, honors, awards, certifications, patents and/or publications as appropriate
First Time Job Seekers
- Include information on school projects and activities
- Include information on activities outside of school
- Focus on soft skills (high aptitude for learning, good attitude, relationships, communication) and give examples if possible
INTERVIEW TIPS
What are the steps in Cymer's hiring process?
If we determine you meet the qualifications of an available position, a Talent Acquisition Partner or Human Resources representative from Cymer will contact you to set up a time to conduct a phone interview. If the position seems like a good fit for both you and the company, a second phone interview will be scheduled with the hiring manager.
Based on feedback from the hiring manager, we may schedule one or more on-site interviews with stakeholders within the company. We are committed to providing interviews within a reasonable time period.
Preparing for the Interviews:
- Do your research - about the company, about the position, about the people. Ask your network for any insight or advice
- Prepare questions for each interviewer.
- Dress for success
During the Interview:
- SMILE - even for phone interviews.
- Offer a firm handshake at the beginning and at the end of a face-to-face meeting
- Sit up straight
- Try and build rapport - keep to open topics such as weather, weekend plans, location. Stay away from personal topics like family and politics
- Ask each interviewer what is important to them about the position
- Keep their answers in mind when answering questions about your experience and background
- Use specific examples when speaking about your experience. Be clear about your personal contribution and results.
- If you do not understand a question, ask for it to be repeated or rephrased
- If you need time to respond, repeat the question back and then answer. Or take a few moments to gather your thoughts and then respond.
- Do not ask what the salary or pay range is for the position
- Be prepared for behavioral based interview questions. These typically start with, "Give me an example of when...", "Tell me about a time...", "How did you...", etc.
At the end of - and after - the Interview:
- Ask the interviewer if there are any outstanding issues or concerns that you can answer
- Let the interviewer know you are interested in the position
- Ask the interviewed when they expect to make a decision
- Offer a firm handshake, smile and thank them for their time
- Send a follow up letter or email thanking them again for the time spent.
